Thompson Calls House Republicans to Stop Granstanding and Serve

WASHINGTON, DC  - Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (MS-02) released the following statement today on the government shutdown:

“Today, over 800,000 government employees have been “laid off” or furloughed due to an irresponsible, irrational and unstable group of House Republicans. In Mississippi, eight national parks are closed, passport and gun permit processing have ceased and many federal employees will work but will not receive pay.

“It is time for House Republicans to return to the court and play ball. As elected officials, it is our responsibility to serve and make the best decisions for the people who send us to Congress. Shutting down the government benefit no one and only serves the warped political interests of a select few.

“Last night, House Republicans refused to compromise for the betterment of their constituencies or their staff. Attempting to cut health insurance for millions of Americans is unacceptable.

“What is important for Americans is that enrollment into the new healthcare marketplace, where millions of Americans can now access affordable, accessible health insurance, begins today.

“So, I call on the House Republicans to stop their political grandstanding and begin working for the people.”
