Thompson Opposes Closing Win Job Centers in Second District

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (MS-02) makes public his stance against the Mississippi Department of Employment Security’s decision to close six WIN Job Centers in the Second Congressional District.

“With the Department of Labor this month reporting an increase in the national unemployment rate, there is no excuse for the closure of Winn Job Centers in the district with the highest unemployment rate in the state.  In a state that lacks an effective public transportation system, the location of job centers is critical to serving the needs of the people and getting Mississippians back to work.  The public deserves answers on the removal of these centers, and I encourage the Mississippi Department of Employment Security to keep these centers running.”

The Mississippi Department of Employment Security has elected to close 13 WIN Job Centers statewide by June 21, 2013. Of the 13 job centers selected to close, six are in the Second Congressional District. Closing Win Job Centers will result in 25 employees being laid off and nearly 75 others having reduced hours. The following centers are expected to close in the Second District: Belzoni, Hazlehurst, Kosciusko, Rolling Fork, Tunica, and Yazoo City.
