Thompson Ask for Investigation of Jackson Veteran Affairs Medical Facility

Washington, DC – In a letter today, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) requested that the United States Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) investigate the recent findings reported by the U.S. Office of Special Counsel which indicated poor management and failed oversight at the G.V. Sonny Montgomery Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). This request comes after Thompson’s July 2012 letter asking that VA officials investigate a litany of management and care issues.

Thompson released the following statements:

“The recent Office of Special Counsel’s findings outline significant problems which coincide with past issues within our veterans’ care system,” said Thompson. “The brave men and women of our armed services have given of themselves tremendously and our charge is to insure that they receive quality health services which reflect their sacrifice.”

“We must serve our veterans as well as they have served us. We owe them the care they were promised and the benefits that they have earned.”

“The leadership within the VAMC has assured me that they are capable of transforming the center into a high-performing organization that will better serve veterans. However, more due diligence and proper oversight will be needed to insure that we are delivering the best health care to our veterans, improving the quality of their services and continuing to prepare to meet veterans’ national emergent needs.”
