CONGRESSMAN THOMPSON ANNOUNCES $300,000 AWARDED TO CATHOLIC CHARITIES, INCORPORATED

BOLTON, MISSISSIPPI – Today, United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) announced The United States Department of Justice has awarded a grant through the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) in the amount of $300,000 to Catholic Charities, Incorporated.

The Engaging Men in Preventing Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, and Stalking Grant Program was created by the Violence Against Women and the Department of Justice Reauthorization Act of 2005. Acknowledging that men are a critical part of successful efforts to prevent sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking, the Engaging Men Grant Program creates a unique opportunity for OVW to support projects that focus primarily on prevention. Projects must address the following statutory purpose area: create public education campaigns and community organizing to encourage men and boys to work as allies with women and girls to prevent violence against women and girls conducted by entities that have experience in conducting public education campaigns that address domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking.

Catholic Charities, Inc. (CCI) has 24 programs operating in three locations: Jackson, Natchez, and Vardaman, Mississippi. The service area for Catholic Charities, Inc. is the upper two-thirds of the state, spanning 65 of the 82 counties in Mississippi. The proposed new project will be developed and implemented by Catholic Charities, Inc. and its community partners, the Rape Crisis Center, the Shelter for Battered Families, and New Horizon Ministries, Inc. The project will include eight counties in central Mississippi which include Hinds, Rankin, Madison, Simpson, Yazoo, Issaquena, Sharkey, and Warren counties. Through this project, funds will be used to develop a public awareness education campaign that includes public service announcements, brochures, advertisements, rallies, and billboards.
