CONGRESSMAN THOMPSON ANNOUNCES $268,800 AWARDED TO THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

BOLTON, MISSISSIPPI – Today, United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) announced The United States Department of Transportation has awarded $268,800 to the Mississippi Department of Transportation for replacement of various interpretive panels at American Indian sites within the Mississippi section of the Natchez Trace Parkway. Primary locations include Emerald, Mangum, Bynum and Pharr Mounds, as well as 5 additional American Indian sites.

The National Scenic Byways Program (Title 23, United States Code, Section 162) provides funding to States and Indian tribes to implement projects on highways designated as National Scenic Byways; All-American Roads; America's Byways®; State scenic byways; or Indian tribe scenic byways; and to plan, design, and develop a State or Indian tribe scenic byway program. Funding supports projects that manage and protect outstanding scenic, historic, cultural, natural, recreational, and archaeological qualities along these byways; interpret these qualities for visitors; and improve visitor facilities.

This project will design, fabricate, and install new and replacement interpretive signs on the Natchez Trace Parkway. Interpretive signage helps visitors to understand the significance of the byway, and replacement of outdated and insensitive waysides will offer byway travelers an updated, more accurate portrayal of the American Indian story.
