CONGRESSMAN THOMPSON ANNOUNCES $16,137 AWARDED TO THE CITY OF GREENVILLE

BOLTON, MISSISSIPPI – Today, United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) announced The United States Department of Justice has awarded an Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant in the amount of $16,137 to the City of Greenville.

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas:  law enforcement programs;  prosecution and court programs;  prevention and education programs;  corrections and community corrections programs;  drug treatment and enforcement programs;  planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and  crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The disparate jurisdictions will use the JAG award to purchase portable radios and chargers, radar speed dash mounts, and laptop computers. Additionally, both agencies will purchase software to ensure the radios will be functional throughout this grant period and beyond. The project goals are to enhance the ability to investigate, communicate, collaborate, and share information internally and externally with other law enforcement agencies and prosecutors through technology and interoperable advancements.
