CONGRESSMAN THOMPSON ANNOUNCES $262,764 AWARDED TO THE CITY OF JACKSON


BOLTON, MISSISSIPPI – Today, United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) announced The United States Department of Justice has awarded an Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant in the amount of $262,764 to the City of Jackson.

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas:  law enforcement programs;  prosecution and court programs;  prevention and education programs;  corrections and community corrections programs;  drug treatment and enforcement programs;  planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and  crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The city of Jackson and the county of Hinds will support criminal justice initiatives. JAG funds will be used to purchase law enforcement equipment and supplies, and fund personnel for the prosecution and court programs. The goal is to improve criminal justice services.
