CONGRESSMAN THOMPSON ANNOUNCES $17,268 AWARDED TO THE CITY OF GREENWOOD


BOLTON, MISSISSIPPI – Today, United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) announced The United States Department of Justice has awarded an Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant in the amount of $17,268 to the City of Greenwood.

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas:  law enforcement programs;  prosecution and court programs;  prevention and education programs;  corrections and community corrections programs;  drug treatment and enforcement programs;  planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and  crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).


The grantee will use the JAG award to support law enforcement and communication initiatives. Specifically, funds will be used to purchase updated narrow band mobile and portable radios and reflective safety vests for officers. The goal is to upgrade communications between officers and other agencies in the law enforcement community.
