Thompson Statement on Supreme Court Decision Upholding Health Care Reform

 

Washington, D.C. – CongressmanBennie G. Thompson (D-MS) released the following statement today after theSupreme Court ruled the Affordable Care Act constitutional:

“Today’s ruling by the UnitedState Supreme Court should put to rest our nation’s unnecessary, partisandebate over access to affordable healthcare.”

 

“This decision by the highestcourt of the land to uphold the Affordable Care Act guarantees that ourneediest and most vulnerable citizens will have improved healthcare coverageincluding the ability to obtain preventative care.”

 

“An overwhelming majority of thecounties across the state of Mississippi have been classified as medicallyunderserved. The Affordable Care Act provides significant help andsupport for these counties through essential investments to community healthcenters and programs like the Health Service Corps which provides student loanrepayments for health care professionals who agree to work in underservedareas.”

 

“This ruling will expand coverageto an estimated 350,000 residents of Mississippi’s Second CongressionalDistrict who currently lack adequate healthcare including seniors, students and children.”

 

“With today’s decision, we canfinally move forward with fully implementing the long overdue and pivotalchanges necessary for strengthening our nation’s healthcare system.”
