Thompson Releases Statement on Grenada Railway’s Decision to Maintain Rail Service in Carroll, Grenada, Holmes, Madison, and Montgomery Counties

Today, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) released the following statement regarding Grenada Railway’s decision to halt plans to abandon 83 miles of track between Canton and Grenada, Mississippi.

“I am very pleased that Grenada Railway has ended its quest to abandon its rail line between Canton and Grenada,” said Thompson.  “I commend all of the local governments for banding together to save this rail service.  Local leaders were prepared to take all necessary actions to maintain this rail service.  Removing the rail line would have a tremendous impact on this region’s ability to retain and recruit jobs.  A host of companies, employing hundreds of individuals, depend on the rail line to provide a low-cost method of shipping and receiving goods.”

On September 20, 2011, Grenada Railway filed a petition with the National Transportation Surface Board (NTSB) to abandon the rail line in Carroll, Grenada, Holmes, Madison, and Montgomery Counties in Mississippi. On Today, November 10, 2011, Grenada Railway filed a petition with the NTSB ending its effort to abandon the rail line.
