Thompson Opposes Repeal of the Affordable Care Act

BOLTON, MISSISSIPPI—Today, United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) released the following statement regarding his vote against H.R. 2, which would repeal the The Affordable Care Act.

“Today with the American people in mind, I cast a vote against a repeal of the The Affordable Care Act,” Thompson said.  “All twenty-three counties in the Second Congressional District have been designated as Medically Underserved by the Health Resources and Services Administration and many of my constituents are unable to afford the rising cost of health coverage.  To combat these challenges, in my district alone The Affordable Care Act improves coverage to 315,000 individuals with health insurance, enhances Medicare for 106,000 beneficiaries, and provides funding for dozens of community health centers which greatly benefits my constituents.

“In the first few days of this Congress, with less than eight hours of debate, my Republican colleagues have attempted to chip away at a concrete policy that took more than eighteen months to put together.   Much like Social Security and Veterans’ Benefits, the improvements included in The Affordable Care Act should be protected.  We should be fighting to uphold, not repeal sound health care policy that millions of Americans are currently benefiting from and countless more stand to benefit when fully implemented. I will continue to fight against any reduction in affordable and accessible health care for all Americans and urge my colleagues to do the same.”
