MLB, NBA, WNBA, NHL, NFL, and USOC to Discuss Climate Change with Bicameral Task Force
Tomorrow Rep. Henry A. Waxman and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, co-chairs of the Bicameral Task Force on Climate Change, will host representatives from five of America’s major sports leagues, as well as the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC), to discuss the effects of climate change on sporting activities and the work these organizations are doing to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The group will meet for a closed-door discussion, followed by a press availability.
Earlier this year, the Task Force wrote to over 300 businesses and organizations, soliciting their views on actions the federal government could take to address climate change. Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Basketball Association (NBA), National Hockey League (NHL), and National Football League (NFL) all responded with letters which include details about their sustainability efforts. Copies of the letters will be made available at the press availability. The USOC and Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) have also prioritized sustainability. The Bicameral Task Force will recognize these organizations for taking the threat of climate change seriously and doing their part to reduce GHG emissions.
The Bicameral Task Force on Climate Change, founded in January 2013, focuses on drawing congressional and public attention to climate change and developing effective policy responses to this urgent challenge. The co-chairs are Rep. Henry A. Waxman, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, Sen. Ben Cardin, Sen. Ed Markey, Rep. Bobby L. Rush, and Rep. Earl Blumenauer.
