Hanna Recognizes Native American Contributions
March 4, 2014In July 2012, Congressman Richard Hanna joined Oneida Nation Representative Ray Halbritter outside the United States Capitol for the announcement of the Nation's $10 million donation to support the construction of the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia.
Congressman Hanna appreciates the important role Native Americans played in the history of our country and the need to honor their contributions. Additionally, he is a supporter of key legislation to assist Native Americans, including the Native American Education Act (H.R.1658) and the Indian Tribal Trade and Investment Demonstration Project Act (H.R. 2362), and continues to support leaders of the Oneida Nation as they work to improve economic opportunities and development in upstate New York.
In 2013, the Oneida Indian Nation reached an agreement with New York and elected representatives of Madison and Oneida counties to settle long-standing and contentious land and tax issues and provide revenue to local governments. In March 2014, the agreement was approved by a federal judge.
Richard believes the settlement allows all residents of Madison and Oneida counties an opportunity to move forward toward greater economic opportunity and shared prosperity.
Joining Halbritter and Hanna in the above picture for the presentation are: Oneida Chuck Fougnier (second from right), Oneida Nation Council member Clint Hill (far right) and former New York Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle (center).
