Roskam Iran Oversight Measure Headed to President’s Desk

Dec 4, 2014
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC–Today, Congressman Peter Roskam (IL-06) released the following statement on a measure seeking transparency on the Iran nuclear negotiations he co-authored with Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (R-IN) was included in the final 2015 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which the House unanimously passed today.  The Roskam-Walorski measure requires the Obama administration to report to Congress on Iran’s compliance with ongoing nuclear negotiations and the overall state of its nuclear program. The 2015 NDAA is expected to pass the Senate and be signed into law by President Obama before the end of the year.

“Nearly one year ago, the Obama administration entered into a dangerous nuclear agreement with Iran despite widespread opposition from Congress and the American people. Throughout the two failed rounds of negotiations Iran has refused to comply with the terms of the agreement by routinely denying the International Atomic Energy Agency access to its suspected nuclear and military facilities. Yet the Administration has turned a blind eye to these blatant violations while keeping Congress and the American people completely in the dark on Iran’s progress toward nuclear weapons capability. This amendment will, for the first time, require the Administration to finally come clean on its closed-door negotiations with the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism. I want to thank Congresswoman Walorski for working with me on this critical measure, which will bring much-needed transparency and accountability to what has been a secretive, harmful process. Congress should act immediately to reinstate strong sanctions against Iran to pressure its leadership to fully dismantle their illicit nuclear program.”

You can read the full amendment in Sec. 1271 (pages 749-750) of the NDAA here.
