Rooney Statement on Iran Nuclear Talks

Nov 24, 2014
Press Release

Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Tom Rooney (FL-17) issued the following statement on the seven-month delay for negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program:

“A deal for the sake of making a deal is not acceptable.  Unfortunately, that’s exactly what the President is signaling. Any deal with Iran must maintain the tough approach favored by both parties in Congress and supported by the American people. To be effective, any agreement must dismantle, not simply delay, Iran’s nuclear program, and include strict limitations on research and development combined with significant oversight and inspection mechanisms. Sanctions must remain in place until Iran is in full compliance.

“As long as Iran refuses to abandon its nuclear weapons program, continues to act as a state sponsor of terrorism, and threatens its neighbors in the Middle East, we should offer it no concessions. Unfortunately, this delay increases the likelihood that the Obama Administration will continue its pattern of reducing sanctions and appeasing Iran. If the President will not hold Iran accountable, Congress must act decisively.”
