WASHINGTON, DC –The Obama Administration today announced two improvements to its ongoing implementation of the Affordable Care Act: the appointment of former Microsoft executive Kurt DelBene and transition relief for the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) exchange in certain counties in Washington state.

“With today’s announcements, it is clear that the Obama Administration is serious about listening to criticism and improving the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

“As glitches get fixed and a workable marketplace becomes expected, Healthcare.gov needs a strong and creative mind at its helm. In appointing Kurt DelBene, HHS chose a respected professional with a track record of success. He understands the tech industry and knows what it takes to make the exchange website truly succeed. I look forward to seeing what he will bring to the table.

“Washington state’s SHOP is only available in two counties for 2014.   As a result, thousands of small businesses face difficulties finding affordable health care for their employees. In the absence of a SHOP exchange in most of the state this year, small business employers that want to provide affordable health care to their employees could no longer receive the ACA tax credit for doing the right thing. Thankfully, the Obama Administration saw the problem and stepped in to ensure that Washingtonians are not left behind.

“I applaud the work that the Administration is doing to get ACA back on track and up to the standards the American people deserve."
