WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Senator John Thune (R-South Dakota), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, today issued the following statement regarding the extension of the Iranian nuclear talks:

“After continued unsuccessful talks and repeated extensions while Iran continues to enrich, it is increasingly evident that the administration is unable to secure a deal that will force Iran to fully suspend its enrichment program. Any agreement allowing Iran to maintain significant nuclear enrichment capabilities will likely prompt neighboring countries to pursue nuclear enrichment programs of their own, increasing tensions in an already volatile region and further threatening the security of our ally Israel.

“Given the fact that it’s been a year since the original six-month interim agreement, it is time for the Senate to take action on the bipartisan Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act to impose additional sanctions on Iran.”
