Postal Renaming Legislation to Honor Ohio Fallen Soldiers Passes Senate

Legislation Heads to President's Desk for Signature

Washington, D.C. – Last evening, legislation sponsored by U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) to rename three United States Postal Service facilities located in Central Ohio after fallen heroes from Ohio passed the U.S. Senate. The legislation now heads to the President’s desk for signature. Written by Representatives Pat Tiberi (OH-12) and Steve Stivers (OH-15), the legislation passed the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this year.

“Our men and women in uniform have freed people, secured the peace, and helped to make this nation the greatest the world has ever seen,” said Portman. “We must never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and I am proud that we can now pay a small tribute to honor these fallen heroes from Ohio with the renaming of U.S. Postal Service facilities.”

“Today we are one step closer to honoring the legacy of Ohio service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms,” said Brown. “The renaming of postal facilities in Dublin, Hilliard, and London is just a small way we can honor the service and sacrifice of four Ohio heroes. I urge President Obama to sign these bills immediately.”

H.R. 4919 will rename the United States Postal Service facility located at 715 Shawan Falls Drive in Dublin, Ohio, as the “Lance Corporal Wesley G. Davids and Captain Nicholas J. Rozanski Memorial Post Office” in honor of United States Marine Wesley G. Davids and United States Army National Guardsman Nicholas J. Rozanski. Rep. Tiberi led the legislation which passed the House of Representatives earlier this year.

“Family and friends certainly cherish their memories of Lance Corporal Wesley Davids and Captain Nicholas Rozanski and now they will be recognized in their community for their sacrifice,” said Tiberi. “I join my colleagues and a grateful nation in honoring them.”

Wesley G. Davids, a Marine Reservist with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines, was killed on May 11, 2005 by a roadside bomb in Karabilah, Iraq. Davids was a 2003 graduate of Dublin Scioto High School.

Captain Nicholas Rozanski of the Ohio Army National Guard was killed in action in April 2012 while training Afghan security forces. Captain Rozanski was a graduate of Dublin Coffman High School and the Ohio State University.

H.R. 1391 will rename the United States Postal Service facility located at 25 South Oak Street in London, Ohio, as the “London Fallen Veterans Memorial Post Office” in honor of the fallen veterans from the City of London and Madison County. Rep. Stivers (OH-sponsored the legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives which passed earlier this year.

H.R. 4189 will rename the United States Postal Service facility located at 4000 Leap Road in Hilliard, Ohio, as the “Master Sergeant Shawn T. Hannon, Master Sergeant Jeffrey J. Rieck and Veterans Memorial Post Office Building” in honor of Ohio Army National Guardsmen Master Sergeant Shawn Hannon and Master Sergeant Jeffrey Rieck. The bill is also sponsored by Rep. Stivers and passed earlier this year.

“This is a small measure our nation can take to honor the lives’ of brave service members who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms,” Stivers said. “These men and women deserve to be properly honored for their courageous service and I thank God every day that heroes like these stand on the front lines and protect our freedom.”

Master Sergeant Shawn Hannon of Grove City, Ohio, lost his life on April 4, 2012, while deployed to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom. He served in the Ohio National Guard.
