Rep. Joe Garcia Honors Hispanic Heritage Month

For Immediate Release: September 15, 2014     Contact: Nicole M. Cueto (202) 480-7274

MIAMI, FL – Every year, the Hispanic community recognizes the many achievements and contributions the Hispanic community has made to the foundation of America by celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th through October 15th. In honor of this celebration, Congressman Joe Garcia has issued the following statement -

As I contemplate the countless accomplishments and sacrifices made by Hispanics in my community, I can’t help but think of my parents who fled Cuba when they were 17 to come to this country to make a better life for our family and create a future for my brothers and I. They, like thousands of other families, left everything they ever knew, in pursuit of freedom, opportunity and a better life for themselves and their families!

As so many people like my parents and grandparents began to rebuild their lives, they also worked to strengthen the foundation of America. Over the course of history, they’ve built some of our country’s biggest businesses, founded some of the most important institutions, and have developed some of our country’s greatest innovations.

Today, there are more than 3.1 million Hispanic-owned businesses, that will together, contribute over of $468 billion to the American economy this year.  As a matter of fact, 7 out of the top 10 Hispanic business leaders named by the Hispanic 500 are right here in Florida. In my district, you not only see the economic contributions, but the cultural ones as well that create a beautifully vibrant and diverse community.

And while there are so many reasons to celebrate the many accomplishments of our Hispanic community, there is still much work to do!

Rest assured, I will continue to support the priorities of the Hispanic community, job creation, accessible and affordable healthcare and quality education.  And for my family, neighbors and future families, I will stay steadfast committed to finding a common-sense solution to comprehensive immigration reform that will secure our borders, unite our families and offer an earned pathway to citizenship.

This month, I look forward to celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and I hope you will join me in doing the same as we look forward to ensuring the progress of our nation for future generations to come!
