Seniors Issues

At a time when our population is aging and many retirement funds have been affected by the financial crisis, Congressman Garcia believes that the financial stability of our seniors and other beneficiaries should not depend on the constant fluctuation of financial markets.

With nine of the ten top cities for tax-ID fraud located in Florida, many seniors have unfortunately been victims of tax identity fraud. To address this issue, Congressman Joe Garcia introduced the SAFE ID Act, a bipartisan piece of legislation that combats tax identity fraud by allowing for a truncated taxpayer identification number, rather than a social security number, to be used on taxpayer W-2 forms.

We must also ensure that the many programs in place adequately serve our seniors and are sustainable for many future generations to come. When assessing the needs of our nation’s healthcare system, Congressman Garcia understands that we must work across the aisle to create a thoughtful, measured, and balanced approach to address our country’s economic challenges. While we need to take sensible steps to control rising healthcare costs, Congressman Garcia believes that we cannot sacrifice the needs of those who depend on the vital programs of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.  We must ensure that older Americans have economic security and receive the health care that they need and deserve.
