Committees and Caucuses

Congressman Gallego serves on the House Armed Services Committee, of particular significance because of the large military presence in Texas. The Armed Services Committee has jurisdiction over defense policy, ongoing military operations, the organization and reform of the Department of Defense and Department of Energy, counter-drug programs, acquisition and industrial base policy, technology transfer and export controls, joint interoperability, the Cooperative Threat Reduction program, Department of Energy nonproliferation programs, and detainee affairs and policy.

Congressman Gallego is one of four Texans to serve on the House Agriculture Committee. Within the committee he serves on the subcommittees on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management, and Livestock, Rural Development and Credit.
The Committee’s jurisdiction ranges from all aspects of farming from helping farmers and ranchers who are new to the industry, to planting, growing, and harvesting; including, insurance programs, stabilization programs, price and yield loss, and credit. Conservation, and food safety and inspection methods are also within the jurisdiction of the committee. Lastly, food assistance programs and food initiatives fall within the committee. The committee’s main oversight is over the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
General Farm Commodities and Risk Management: Program and markets related to cotton, cottonseed, wheat, feed grains, soybeans, oilseeds, rice, dry beans, peas, lentils, the Commodity Credit Corporation, risk management, including crop insurance, commodity exchanges, and specialty crops.
Livestock, Rural Development, and Credit: Livestock, dairy, poultry, meat, seafood and seafood products, inspection, marketing, and promotion of such commodities, aquaculture, animal welfare, and grazing, rural development, farm security and family farming matters, and agricultural credit.
