Civic Internship Program

The Congressional Civic Internship is a three-four month program that uniquely integrates work experience with professional and educational development. The Civic Internship provides individuals with an invaluable learning experience about the functions of the House of Representatives, of local government participation and of Congressman Garamendi’s work representing the 3rd Congressional District.

Washington, DC

In the Washington DC office, the Civic Internship Program will run throughout the fall, spring or summer semesters for college students. Although all internships in all offices are unpaid, students gain invaluable work experience. The hours are flexible to accommodate students' hectic course schedules, but generally run 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. when Congress is in session, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. when not in session.

In Washington, Civic Interns' responsibilities will vary. They will be asked to answer phones, run errands, research legislation for the Member and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings and answer constituent letters on various issues before the House. As a result, interns learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a congressional office.

In the District Office, Civic Interns will develop leadership capabilities and networking skills by spearheading outreach projects, will assist congressional staff with office responsibilities, will gain in-depth knowledge of the decision making process in local government, and will complete research assignments – preparing policy and event reports.

Civic Interns will attend a 3-day orientation program in regards to the district office’s operations and projects, which will provide interns with an overview of the various civic programs, outreach projects, research assignments and administrative office tasks each intern will be responsible for accomplishing. The program will also prepare Interns for their Civic Intern projects, due at the end of the program.
