WASHINGTON­—Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) today voted against the Fiscal Year 2015 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The bill contained a total of $577.1 billion in discretionary defense funding, nearly twice the level of pre-9/11 national defense spending. The NDAA included $495.9 billion for the Department of Defense (DOD) base budget, $63.7 billion for the Overseas Contingency Operations account, and $17.5 billion for the Department of Energy national security programs.

"Today I voted 'no' on the McKeon Amendment to arm and train so-called 'moderate' Syrian rebels as part of a broad new multi-year military intervention in Iraq and Syria outlined by President Obama last week. I also voted 'no' on the continuing resolution in which it was incorporated.

Huffman voted for a number of amendments to improve the bill, including the Lofgren amendment, which curtails the NSA’s domestic surveillance program, and the Lee amendment to prevent further escalation in Iraq.

WASHINGTON­—Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) released the following statement after voting for the Fiscal Year 2014 Consolidated Appropriations Act, H.R. 3547, the omnibus budget bill to fund the government through September 30, 2014. The bill provides $1.012 trillion for the operation of the federal government and avoids a government shutdown. It passed by a bipartisan vote of 359-67.

WASHINGTON­—Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) today joined a bipartisan group of more than 70 House Members in introducing legislation to reform U.S. national security laws and end the wide-ranging surveillance of Americans by the National Security Agency (NSA). This legislation, known as the USA FREEDOM Act, comes after recent revelations that the NSA has tapped the phones of leaders of allied nations and regularly intruded on the civil liberties of Americans by collecting their "metadata" telephone records.
