WASHINGTON­—Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) today voted against the Fiscal Year 2015 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The bill contained a total of $577.1 billion in discretionary defense funding, nearly twice the level of pre-9/11 national defense spending. The NDAA included $495.9 billion for the Department of Defense (DOD) base budget, $63.7 billion for the Overseas Contingency Operations account, and $17.5 billion for the Department of Energy national security programs.

WASHINGTON­—Today, Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) introduced a bill that would prevent the United States Export-Import bank—one of the world’s largest sources of public financing for fossil fuel projects—from financing polluting energy projects. Since 2007, the Export-Import Bank provided more than $7.2 billion in financing for coal-fired power plants around the world—all backed by American taxpayer dollars.

WASHINGTON­—Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) today voted against a budget that, according to the non-partisan Economic Policy Institute, will cost the economy 3 million jobs and decrease economic growth by 2.5 percent in 2016. The budget proposal authored by House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan, which passed the House on a largely party-line vote of 219-205, would reduce funding for infrastructure, clean energy, education, research, innovation, and manufacturing.

WASHINGTON­—Today the House Budget Committee approved the bipartisan Biennial Budgeting and Enhanced Oversight Act (H.R. 1869), which is cosponsored by Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael). The bill would convert the federal government to a two-year budget cycle, alleviating much of the uncertainty caused by the current annual budget cycle.

WASHINGTON­—Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael), joined by Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA), today introduced a bill to help modernize the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) inefficient and outdated vehicle fleet. The Federal Leadership in Energy Efficient Transportation (FLEET) Act of 2014 (H.R. 3963) would require the USPS to reduce their petroleum consumption by 2% each year over the next 10 years.

WASHINGTON­—Congressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) released the following statement after voting for the Fiscal Year 2014 Consolidated Appropriations Act, H.R. 3547, the omnibus budget bill to fund the government through September 30, 2014. The bill provides $1.012 trillion for the operation of the federal government and avoids a government shutdown. It passed by a bipartisan vote of 359-67.

We now have an opportunity to show that Congress can do better: today, I am reviewing a tentative budget deal that may prevent a government shutdown early next year.
