Education is one of the most powerful tools we can give our children. From early education all the way through graduate studies and beyond, Brian strongly believes that all students should be given an equal chance to succeed. In order to prepare students to enter the workforce, Higgins has been a strong advocate for math and science education, in addition to workforce training programs, to give students the marketable skills they need to compete in a globalized economy. Brian has also been outspoken on the need to make higher education more affordable to reduce the skyrocketing education debt burden faced by so many recent graduates.

Congressman Higgins Announces Over $1 Million in Federal Grants for Schools in Cheektowaga & Buffalo
Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) announced over $1 million in grant funding for the Buffalo Board of Education, the Cleveland Hill Union Free School District and the Cheektowaga Central School District. The grants, awarded through the Department of Education, aim to make schools safer and improve mental health and supportive services for students.

The district will receive $330,000 over three years through the U.S. Department of Education to be used for elementary school counseling programs.

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) announced a federal grant totaling $340,800 for the Daemen College Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship Program. The funding, provided through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will help train, educate and employ new primary care providers.
“This grant serves as a win-win as it provides a quality Daemen education and job placement for students and delivers trained health care providers to fill a vital need in the community,” said Congressman Higgins.

Higgins Congratulates WNY High School Students Selected to Participate in Congressional Science Fair
Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) spoke on the House Floor yesterday to congratulate Seamus Degan, Rex Herzberg, and Hakeem Salem, City Honors High School students who were chosen to present their research projects at the Congressional Science Fair, hosted in the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center.
Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) spoke on the House Floor to recognize Teacher Appreciation Week, which is observed each year from May 5-9. Higgins encouraged his colleagues to recommit to adequately funding education programs and ensuring that teachers have access to necessary resources.
Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) announced that the deadline for submitting entries to the Congressional Student App Challenge has been extended to May 30, 2014.
“As the school year comes to an end, we know that many high school students have a number of obligations,” said Congressman Higgins. “Because designing an application takes time, we wanted to make sure that everyone who is interested in participating in this challenge, has the necessary time to do so.”
