Recent revelations of systemic failures at Veterans Administrations (VA) hospitals across the nation have frayed America’s contract with veterans, as well as with the public at large. Such mismanagement is intolerable and needs to be fixed – immediately.

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) issued the following statement today after President Barack Obama accepted the resignation of U.S. Secretary of Veterans’ Affairs Eric Shinseki:

“While the failures at the VA are bigger than one person, Secretary Shinseki’s resignation is appropriate given the chronic problems at the Veterans Health Administration. New leadership at the VA must lead to correct the failures and restore the trust of our veterans and the American people.

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) has successfully amended the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), with two amendments focused on improving the lives of service members.

The U.S. House of Represetatives passed the amendmends in a unanimous, bipartisan, late-night vote.

“I am pleased that the House adopted both of my amendments to care for our wounded men and women returning from overseas, and to protect service members near military bases from predatory lenders,” Kildee said.

For 1,000 days, my constituent, Amir Hekmati, has been held prisoner in Iran. For 1,000 days, an innocent man has languished in a prison cell. For Amir’s last 1,000 days, holidays have passed. Birthdays have gone uncelebrated. Cherished moments with family have been missed.
