U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint Twp., got a chance to say, "I told you so," during an appearance in Flint Friday, Sept. 26, and didn't let it pass.

Speaking at a grand opening for Oak Street Senior Apartments, Kildee, the former chairman of the Genesee County Land Bank, remembered back to 2005 -- a time when the same property was boarded up and empty and the Land Bank accepted it as a gift from the Flint School District.

Dignitaries from Lansing and Washington, D.C., praised the transformation of a century-old school into apartments for senior citizens in Flint today, Sept. 26.

U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint, said Oak Street should be considered alongside some of the best redevelopment projects in Flint, including the old Durant Hotel.

"You have to have a vision, (and) you have to have a plan," said Kildee, who said the act of restoring a single building can turn into the restoration of a neighborhood or even a city.

U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint Township, is hosting a set of smart borrowing forums this week including a stop in Flint on student loans and college affordability.

The Flint forum has been scheduled from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24 at the Northbank Center Ballroom, 432 N. Saginaw St., and will focus on helping students find their path on paying for college.

Aboard the Appledore IV schooner on the Saginaw River, Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) today announced a congressional resolution he will be introducing to protect Michigan’s Great Lakes from the threat of nuclear waste that Canada is proposing to permanently store underground less than a mile from Lake Huron.

The new congressional resolution “expresses the sense of the U.S. House of Representatives that the President and Secretary of State should ensure that the Canadian Government does not permanently store nuclear waste in the Great Lakes Basin.”

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) today distributed free gun locks to residents of the Fifth Congressional District as part of a collaborative effort with local, state and federal law enforcement officials to make Saginaw and other mid-Michigan communities safer. Local law enforcement will join with federal government officials Wednesday, Aug. 27, to distribute free gun locks to the general public in Saginaw.

The program is a cooperative effort being led by U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint Township.

"I'm proud to partner with local, state and federal law enforcement to provide free gun locks to Saginaw residents," Kildee said. "Securing firearms in homes will help to prevent accidental gun-related deaths and reduce instances of gun thefts and violence.
