U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint Twp., got a chance to say, "I told you so," during an appearance in Flint Friday, Sept. 26, and didn't let it pass.
Speaking at a grand opening for Oak Street Senior Apartments, Kildee, the former chairman of the Genesee County Land Bank, remembered back to 2005 -- a time when the same property was boarded up and empty and the Land Bank accepted it as a gift from the Flint School District.

U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint, said Oak Street should be considered alongside some of the best redevelopment projects in Flint, including the old Durant Hotel.
"You have to have a vision, (and) you have to have a plan," said Kildee, who said the act of restoring a single building can turn into the restoration of a neighborhood or even a city.
U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint Twp., toured Flint's Civic Park neighborhood Monday, May 5, getting a first-hand look at a pilot program that aims to improve the appearance of vacant homes.
"It creates a better impression if you drive through than you would think," Kildee said of the window and door coverings designed for vacant properties.
A news release from Joy Tabernacle Church, which is leading the effort with the Genesee County Land Bank, said the joint venture has been funded by the Ruth Mott Foundation.
U. S. Rep. Dan Kildee says it makes "absolutely no sense whatsoever" for county officials to hesitate in backing short-term borrowing for a massive demolition program that's expected to pay for tearing down more than 1,700 homes on abandoned properties.
Kildee, a Flint Township Democrat, helped to champion the program to spend $100 million in federal funds to demolish thousands of vacant homes in Detroit, Genesee County, Grand Rapids, Pontiac and Saginaw.
