U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint Township, is hosting a set of smart borrowing forums this week including a stop in Flint on student loans and college affordability.

The Flint forum has been scheduled from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24 at the Northbank Center Ballroom, 432 N. Saginaw St., and will focus on helping students find their path on paying for college.

Congressman Dan Kildee is pressing Congress to make mid-Michigan communities safer for kids. Kildee introduced a new $6 billion dollar package of bills yesterday at Pierce Creative Arts Elementary School in Flint. It's a three part strategy to use education, job skills, and after- school activities to cut crime. Kildee says it's all in an effort to increase positive opportunities for students.

A $6.325 billion package of bills that Congressman Dan Kildee will carry to Congress is aimed to drive down crime in cities such as Flint with education, job skills and activities for young people after school. Kildee announced the legislative package Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Pierce Elementary School that includes $625 million in new funding over the next five years to help reduce violence in Flint-area communities through after-school programming and summer employment opportunities for young people.

Flint Congressman Dan Kildee says it’s time for the federal government to invest more in after school and youth employment programs.

Kildee plans to introduce a trio of bills this week that would pour billions of dollars into programs to provide jobs to teenagers in the summer, and after school programs where children can learn art, music and physical fitness.

Kildee says these programs help struggling communities, like Flint and Saginaw, that don’t have the resources to provide these kind of programs themselves.

Speaking to a full room at Rotary Club of Flint members Friday, Feb. 21, the Flint Township Democrat talked about some victories over the past year, but also what he will continue to work on. 

"The work that I do is sometimes overwhelming at times. There is a daunting number of subjects I'm required to have an opinion on. ... It's been an interesting first year," Kildee said, adding that he was elected as congressman after his uncle, Dale Kildee, retired after 36 years in Congress. "I hope that my service in some way gives honor to his legacy."
