Delegate Supports Legislature’s Decision to Take Time with HOVENSA Proposal

Nov 14, 2014 Issues: Virgin Islands Issues

(Washington, DC – November 14, 2014) – Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen said today that she supports the decision of the Virgin Islands Legislature to send the proposed refinery agreement to the Committee on Finance for further review.  “We need to ensure that the interests of the people of the Virgin Islands are protected,” she said.

Congresswoman Christensen said Friday that the dire state of the economy, especially on St. Croix, demands that a decision be made as soon as possible, but that it is equally important that the best decision be made.  “A new agreement will jump start and sustain a strong economy, but due diligence is needed to ensure that the benefits to the people are sufficient and that Atlantic Basin Refining (ABR) can satisfactorily demonstrate that they have the experience and track record to successfully restart and operate the facility,” added Christensen. “Although I would like to see the project started sooner rather than later, if that cannot be determined satisfactorily before the Legislature adjourns sine die, then it will have to wait for the 31st Legislature and the new administration.”
