One of U.S. Senator Mike Enzi’s, R-Wyo., biggest concerns is our nation’s debt and he was unhappy with the news that the national debt topped $18 trillion last week.

“Before he became our president, President Obama said it was irresponsible to add $4 trillion to the debt. Since he took over, about $7.4 trillion has been added,” Enzi said. “We still will have an executive in the White House next year who promotes unsustainable spending, but I am hopeful we can make progress on the deficit with new leadership in the Senate.”

Enzi has authored a spending plan that would cut overall spending by 1 percent for three years and cap federal spending at 18 percent afterwards to balance the budget. He has also sponsored biennial appropriations legislation that would allow appropriations bills to be taken up over a 2-year period to allow for more time to conduct oversight and eliminate waste.

Other proposals Enzi has advocated include the Dollar-for-Dollar Deficit Reduction Act , which would require any formal presidential request to increase the public debt limit to be accompanied by proposed legislation to reduce spending by an equal amount; the REFUND Act, which would allow states to return unwanted funds to the Treasury to reduce the federal debt; the Bonuses for Cost-Cutters Act, which would provide awards to federal employees who disclose waste, fraud, or mismanagement that results in cost savings; and a resolution proposing a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution (S. J. Res. 7).
