Art Competition

THE CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITON AWARD

Each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition. Congressman Kevin Cramer of North Dakota, is pleased to participate in this year’s 2014 Congressional Art Competition

APPLICATION PROCESS FOR 2014

To participate in this year’s competition, you must be a student in high school (grades 9-12).  Exceptions will be made for students in 7th and 8th grades that are on the same campus as a high school.  Home schooled students and private school students are permitted to enter.

Students are asked to submit their entries to the North Dakota Juried Student Art Show at the TAUBE MUSEUM OF ART, located at 2 Main Street, Minot, ND 58703 no later than April 1. Their web page address is www.taubemuseum.org and their phone number is

The art will be on display there from April 8 to May 2,2014.  Professional artists chosen by the Taube Museum of Art will chose one winning entry to represent the state of North Dakota.  The winner of this award, known as the Congressional Art Competition Award, will be recognized in their congressional district and will be invited to a reception in Washington, DC (TBA) at the Capitol Visitors Center located at our nation’s capitol.

SPECIFICATIONS FOR ARTWORK

Any two-dimensional media is acceptable.  Size limit, including mat, is 23” x 27”.  Stretched canvas, up to 18” x 20” are acceptable with cardboard on the back the size of the canvas, then shrink wrapped to protect the canvas.   Canvas boards must be shrink wrapped.  No frames are allowed.  Congressman Cramer’s office will provide the frame for the winning entry before it is sent to Washington,DC.  The total weight of the artwork and the frame cannot exceed fifteen pounds.  The art work may be:

  1. Paintings - including oil, acrylics, and watercolor
  2. Drawings - including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers
  3. Collage
  4. Prints - including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints
  5. Mixed Media
  6. Computer Generated Art
  7. Photography

All entries must be an original in concept, design and execution.  No copied work will be accepted.  This includes studies of other artist’s work.  Art work created from photographs taken by anyone other than the artist is not considered original. (In the creation of works of art, originality is one of the most important factors taken into consideration. Without originality, an artist cannot be expected to be taken seriously by the art world. You cannot participate in exhibitions or competitions and your work will be considered unprofessional. Copying art is considered plagiarism).

AWARDS FOR THE 2014 WINNING ENTRY

The Prizes that will be offered to the winner of the Congressional Art Competition for the State of North Dakota are as follows:

D.C. EXHIBIT: The artwork for the winning student will be displayed in the Canon Tunnel, located underneath the Nation’s Capitol, for a period of one year.

SOUTHWEST AIRLINES TICKET OFFER: Two free round-trip tickets on Southwest Airlines will be awarded to the student and a guest so they may attend the winner’s reception in Washington, DC. (Sometime in late June, date and time TBA).  The tickets are valid on SWA from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport to the Baltimore-Washington International airport.  SWA is not able to provide lodging or ground transportation from  Baltimore to Washington, a distance of approximately 45 miles.

SAVANNAH COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN (SCAD) SCHOLARSHIP: The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) will offer a scholarship of $3,000 to each Congressional Art Competition winner who enrolls there and is accepted.  In addition, students may be eligible for additional scholarships based on their academic credentials, documented awards and recognition, extracurricular activities, volunteer or professional experience, and talents. 

INVITATION TO ATTEND THE WINNER’S RECEPTION IN WASHINGTON,DC:  The student and his/her guest will be invited to attend a three hour reception at the Capitol Visitors Center in Washington, DC.  Included in this winner’s reception will be a paid lunch, followed by a program which will include presentations by professional artists and a slide show of the 50 state winner’s artwork. (The winner and his/her guest will be responsible for all of their own expenses during their trip, ie: housing, ground transportation, sight seeing, etc.)
