Barrow to Hold Annual Military Academy Day
AUGUSTA – On Saturday, September 20, 2014, U.S. Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) will host his annual Academy Day for students interested in applying to one of our nation’s four service academies – the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Each year, Congressman Barrow invites academy representatives to visit with prospective students to discuss the opportunities available to them.
“Each year, I have the privilege of meeting with some of the brightest students in our area who want to serve our country,” said Congressman Barrow. “It’s amazing to see these young adults so excited about continuing their education at one of our service academies. I encourage any student who’s interested to come by with their parents, hear what it’s all about, and decide if this is the right path for them to take.”
A congressional nomination is required for students wishing to enter one of the service academies. Students submit applications to Congressman Barrow’s office and are evaluated by his Academy Nomination Advisory Committee, who then recommends to Congressman Barrow the students to be nominated.
Successful applicants must have a broad academic background, the ability to pass a physical aptitude test, and strong leadership potential. An applicant must also be a U.S. citizen, a high school graduate between the ages of 17 and 23, unmarried, have no dependents, and be of high moral character. Acceptance of a service academy appointment requires at least a nine-year service obligation, consisting of four years at an academy and five years of active duty service.
