Art Competition

Each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Artistic Discovery Contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in our congressional district.

The Artistic Discovery Contest is open to all high school students in the 12th District. The over-all winner of our district's competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. The exhibit in Washington will also include artwork from other contest winners nation-wide.

Art works entered in the contest may be up to 32 inches by 32 inches (including the frame) and may be up to 4 inches in depth. The art work may be

  • Paintings - including oil, acrylics, and watercolor
  • Drawings - including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers
  • Collage
  • Prints - including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints
  • Mixed Media
  • Computer Generated Art
  • Photography

All entries must be an original in concept, design and execution.

Requirements for entries are below and available on the 2014 Call for Entries by clicking here:

  • All artwork must be two-dimensional
  • Each framed piece can be no larger than 28” x 28” x 4” (28 inches high, 28 inches wide, and 4 inches deep). If your artwork is selected as the winning piece, it will be required to be framed and must still adhere to the size guidelines.  Artwork cannot weigh more than 15 lbs.
  • Only one entry per student
  • All artwork must fall within one of the following categories:
    • Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolors, etc.
    • Drawings: colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal (It is recommended that
    • charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed.)
    • Collage: must be two dimensional
    • Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
    • Mixed Media: use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.
    • Computer Generated Art
    • Photography
  • No sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, weaving/ fabrics, stained glass or 3-D artwork
  • A TYPED copy of the Student Release form, signed by both the teacher and the student, must be attached to the back of the artwork to certify the originality of the piece. In addition, a second copy of the form should be handed in at the time of submission.
  • All entries must be submitted either by mail to Alan C. MacTaggart, Chairman, Department of Art, Georgia Regents University, Summerville Campus, 2500 Walton Way, Augusta, Georgia 30904 or in person to 240 Washington Hall, Summerville Campus of Georgia Regents University (Art Department Office) by Monday, April 21st.  
  • Each entry must be original in concept, design and execution and must not violate any U.S. Copyright Laws. Any entry that has been copied from an existing photo (not the student’s own), painting, graphic, advertisement, or any other work produced by another person is a violation of the competition rules and will not be accepted.
  • The winning artwork will hang in the Capitol for the entire year of the exhibition and cannot be returned to students earlier. Students, therefore, should submit artwork they will not need for other purposes.
  • The final decision regarding suitability for the exhibition in the capitol will be made by a panel of qualified persons chaired by the Architect of the Capitol.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.
