House App Contest

House Student App Challenge Entry Form

This year marks the kick-off of the Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition, a competition designed to engage students' creativity and encourage their participation in STEM education fields.  Established by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013, this competition will evolve over time and will challenge high school students in specialized areas of science, technology, engineering and math. The competition will initially require students to develop a software application or “app” for mobile, tablet or computer devices on a platform of their choice.

Can I participate?

The House App Contest is open to all high school students who live in or attend a high school located in Indiana’s 5th Congressional District. Students must be 13 years old as of February 1, 2014. Participants may compete individually, but groups of up to four students may submit entries. If submitting as a group, at least two students must be from the 5th District. Students may only compete in one congressional district at a time. Homeschooled students may participate as well. Contestants must be legal residents.

All students must register through our website and must also submit their app on www.challengepost.com. The contest is open now and will close APRIL 30, 2014 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Any submission after that time will not be accepted.

How will the winner be selected?

Each submission will be reviewed by a team of experts in the fields of science, technology, engineering or mathematics who are selected by Congresswoman Brooks.  Awards will be based on the following criteria:

- Quality of the app including creativity and originality

- Implementation of the idea, including user experience and design

- Demonstrated excellence of coding and programming skills

Entries will be judged during the month of May and the winning app will be featured on the U.S. House of Representatives website at www.House.gov

How do I enter?

Between now and 11:59 p.m. on April 30, 2014, register for the House Student App Challenge here to notify our office that you will be submitting an entry on www.challengepost.com.

Next, create an account on www.challengepost.com under the “House Student App Challenge.” You may need to search the website to find the contest. The full rules and requirements are listed there.  Each contestant will be required to provide the following as part of the submission:

1. A link to your application demonstration video. ChallengePost supports YouTube or VIMEO. Please note that your entry may be judged in its entirety based on this video. It is important to demonstrate the scope and quality of your application in this video. The video must not be longer than two minutes.

2. A link to your developer video. You will describe how the app was created and what you learned. This must be no longer than one minute.

3. An entry form.

4. A release form signed by a parent or guardian if the participant is under 18 years of age.

After the Submission Period has ended, the Submission cannot be modified in any way before the completion of judging. All submissions must be in English. An individual may appear on only one entry, either alone or as part of a team.

The Competition is subject to all applicable United States federal laws and regulations. The House of Representatives does not endorse or recommend any commercial products, process or services. For the period of the academic competition and display of the submissions by the House, a contestant may not seek to market or manufacture the submitted app for commercial use. A contestant may not make any reference to the academic competition nor imply an endorsement from the House for the purpose of marketing or manufacturing the submitted app. Participation constitutes the entrant’s full and unconditional agreement to the Official Rules as listed on www.challengepost.com.
