Scalise Statement on Iran Nuclear Talks

Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) today released the following statement regarding an extension to the Iran nuclear talks.

“By extending the relief Iran has been receiving from sanctions, the White House continues to allow Iran to benefit from billions of dollars in economic activity while there is nothing to ensure Iran is prevented from developing a nuclear weapons capability,” Rep. Scalise said. “Since the negotiations began, Iran continues to prevent entry by international inspectors, as they withhold key information from the IAEA, all while receiving billions in relief from economic sanctions under the Joint Plan of Action.

“We cannot allow Iran to indefinitely prolong these discussions, and no deal is better than a bad deal.

“To prevent a nuclear Iran, and the proliferation of a nuclear arms race throughout the unstable Middle East region that will threaten our national security, the Obama Administration must be ready to increase pressure on Iran. It was only through tough economic sanctions that we finally brought Iran to the table, and additional pressure – not more concessions – will be necessary to reverse Iran’s nuclear weapons program.”
