Pelosi Statement on the Nomination of Ashton Carter to be Secretary of Defense

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after President Obama announced he will nominate former Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton B. Carter to succeed Secretary Chuck Hagel as the head of the Department of Defense:

“Dr. Ashton B. Carter is a highly qualified leader and skilled strategist committed to keeping our country safe.  In nominating a previous Deputy Secretary of Defense to lead the Defense Department, President Obama has tapped a proven leader to ensure continuity and provide the strategic vision needed to preserve the security of the American people.

“As a five-time recipient of the Department of Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Dr. Carter has led with honor and served with dignity.  From national security strategy to international cooperative defense efforts, Dr. Carter is a strong administrator whose leadership at the Department of Defense will strengthen our Armed Forces and protect America.

“House Democrats look forward to Dr. Carter’s swift confirmation by the Senate, and to working with him to provide our service members with the resources needed to meet the national security threats and challenges that lie ahead.”
