Chair McMorris Rodgers, Remarks as Prepared for Delivery:

“Today I’d like to tell you the story of a little boy who was diagnosed with Down syndrome just three days after he was born. His diagnosis came with a list of future complications: endless doctors’ appointments, heart defects, even early Alzheimer’s. Seven years later, as the mom of that little boy, Cole, nothing has given me greater joy than watching the impact he has had on the world.

“That’s why I’m proud to stand beside Mr. Crenshaw and help bring the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act to the House floor this week so millions of Americans with disabilities and their families can save for the future. I’ve seen firsthand how outdated laws encourage those with disabilities to resign themselves to a life of dependence. The ABLE Act will change that. It will empower disabled individuals – through tax-free savings accounts – to save for college, retirement, and other future expenses.

“As part of America’s New Congress, we are here to advance real solutions. Solutions that make people’s lives better. Solutions that empower all Americans – no matter where they come from or how much money they make or what challenges they face. The ABLE Act is one of many ways we’re doing that. It’ll empower millions – like my son Cole – with the opportunity to have a better life. And that is why we are here.”
