Cummings-Filner-Smith Mortgage Foreclosure Protection for Servicemembers and Their Families Amendment Passes House

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 21, 2012

Washington, D.C.Ranking Democratic Member Bob Filner (D-CA) joined with top Democrats on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Committee on Armed Services in offering an amendment that provides important safeguards to protect servicemembers and their families from mortgage foreclosures and other important improvements to the Servicemembers’ Civil Relief Act, a law that provides protections for our servicemembers and veterans.

“I want to thank Mr. Cummings for his leadership and my colleagues for overwhelmingly supporting these vital protections for our servicemembers and veterans.”

Filner was joined by the Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD), and the Ranking Member of the Committee on Armed Services, Adam Smith (D-WA), in offering the amendment to H.R. 4310, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013.  The amendment was agreed to by a vote of 394-27.

“The Servicemembers’ Civil Relief Act gives our men and women serving our Nation, and their families, important safeguards to protect their homes when they are called to service.  I am happy to see us all join together to expand protections and make sure that this cornerstone of our commitment to our servicemembers is there for them when they return home.”

The amendment included language from H.R. 1263, introduced by Ranking Member Filner, which passed the House last year.  This bill extended protections to surviving spouses of servicemembers whose deaths were service-connected.

“I applaud my colleagues and know that, working together, we can make sure these important protections are made the law of the land,” said Filner.
