The Subcommittee handles issues related to the technological competitiveness of the U.S.  It has jurisdiction over surface transportation research at the Department of Transportation, R&D; programs at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, R&D; programs at the Department of Homeland Security, and the legal framework for competitiveness and technology policy.  Recently, the Subcommittee has studied standards for voting machines, strengthening U.S. manufacturing, transportation research and border security R&D.;

Subcommittee on Energy and Environment

The Subcommittee handles issues related to environmental science and U.S. energy policy.  It oversees civilian R&D; programs within the Department of Energy (DOE), including basic energy research, energy R&D;, demonstration and commercialization programs for fossil, renewable, and nuclear energy, and conservation; R&D; programs at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA); and research at the Environmental Protection Agency.  Recent issues before the Subcommittee include NOAA satellite programs, the clean coal program, energy research, technologies to mitigate climate change and the future of DOE's national laboratories.

Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight

The Subcommittee handles investigative and oversight activities on matters covering the entire jurisdiction of the Committee on Science and Technology.  In the 110th Congress, the Subcommittee acted on issues related to victims of elevated levels of formaldehyde in temporary trailer housing provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to victims of 2005 hurricanes Katrina and Rita.  In addition, the Subcommittee investigated the improper destruction of scientific biosamples at a government lab, the effects of globalization and offshoring on jobs and technology and the ineffective performance of the Inspector General of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Subcommittee on Research and Science Education

The Subcommittee handles issues related to education, basic research, and the health of the U.S. academic research enterprise.  It oversees National Science Foundation programs and the Office of Science and Technology Policy.  Recently, the Subcommittee has dealt with science and math education, computer security and government-wide R&D; initiatives such as information technology and nanotechnology.

Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics

In general, the Subcommittee handles issues related to civilian aviation and U.S. space activity.  This includes the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), commercial space activities within the Department of Transportation and the Department of Commerce and the aviation R&D; activities of the Federal Aviation Administration.  Recently the Subcommittee has dealt with the next generation of air traffic control, NASA aeronautics programs and NASA's Vision for Space Exploration.
