Washington, DC--Rep. Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House of Representatives Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, released the following statement on Argentina's and Uruguay's decision to recognize Palestine:
"I am deeply disappointed in Argentina's and Uruguay's decision to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state outside of bilateral negotiations and an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. This only gives the Palestinians less incentive to sit at the table with Israel, thinking that all they have to do is sit tight and not negotiate, and the world's recognition will fall into their lap. This misguided approach will only make it more difficult for peace to be achieved in the Middle East."
These actions follow last week's recognition of Palestine by Brazil.
