Chairman Mike Rogers

United States Representative Mike Rogers serves as the Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.  The Committee is the House’s primary panel responsible for authorizing the funding for and overseeing the execution of the intelligence activities of the United States government.

Chairman Rogers brings a wealth of intelligence and national security experience to his role, having served as an officer in the U.S. Army and as a Special Agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation.   In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Rogers’ experience and understanding concerning wiretaps and the legal authorities governing the use of such tools were instrumental in updating the law to ensure that law enforcement and the intelligence community had the tools necessary for tracking terrorists using today’s technology, such as smart phones, social media and the Internet.  Additionally, before assuming the Chairmanship, Rogers issued an Intelligence Committee report on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, authored a bill to protect against chemical and biological threats, and co-authored legislation reauthorizing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

As Chairman, Rogers continues to be a leader in shaping U.S. national security policy.  While re-establishing the Committee’s traditional oversight functions, including passage of regular authorization bills, he remains focused on fostering bipartisan collaboration to provide our intelligence professionals in the field and at home the tools necessary to keep America safe and to thwart and confront existing and emerging threats.  He, with the Committee’s Ranking Member, Dutch Ruppersberger, recently introduced a bill to better protect America from cyber-attacks.  Chairman Rogers is also bringing focused attention to China’s continued emergence as a competitor to U.S. interests, and to threats posed by Iran and North Korea; and he is leading the Committee’s work on the intelligence budget for 2013.

Chairman Rogers was first elected to Congress by the people of Michigan’s 8th Congressional District in 2000.  Chairman Rogers is married and has two children, a daughter and a son.
