Hunger Issues In the News

Making Domestic Hunger a Priority

I recently wrote the governors of all 50 states urging them to prioritize the issue of domestic hunger and food insecurity. In my letter, I laid out initiatives that have proven effective in Virginia and called on each governor to adopt similar provisions in their states. Click here to read my letter.

Speech on Helping the Poor and Vulnerable

In a speech I gave at the American Enterprise Institute's (AEI) event on helping the poor and vulnerable in April, I put forward some broad stroke ideas that I believe would have a positive impact on fighting hunger in communities. Click here to read my speech.

National Commission on Hunger

I’m pleased that my amendment to create a bipartisan National Commission on Hunger was approved in the 2014 Omnibus Appropriations bill – at no new cost to taxpayers. The commission would focus on how we can better empower civic groups, faith-based groups and the private sector to help fight hunger. In the world’s wealthiest nation, one in six Americans struggle to provide enough food for their families at some point during the year and currently 96 percent of hunger assistance comes from the government. We can do better, and I believe this bipartisan commission can provide a roadmap for reducing hunger in the U.S.

Letters of Support for a National Commission on Hunger:

The School Food Recovery Act

meeting with local food bank heads

I introduced the bipartisan School Food Recovery Act in 2009 to authorize schools to give unused excess food to food banks and to protect them from liability under the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Act. After I worked with House colleagues to attach the bill to the annual bill that funds the Department of Agriculture, this important provision was included in the final FY 2012 appropriations bill that was signed into law on November 18, 2011. This is a commonsense change that will ensure that excess good food goes to local food banks, not the trash bin.

With high unemployment and rising food and gas prices, local food banks and pantries are struggling to meet demand and keep their shelves stocked. I believe this new law will help re-stock food bank shelves - at no extra cost to taxpayers.

The Feds Feed Families Food Drive

Another important initiative I have worked to establish is a national canned food drive conducted by federal employees. Every year, under the leadership of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), federal employees join together to collect canned goods to be donated to local food banks around the country.I have also worked to start a similar food drive for members of Congress and their staff on Capitol Hill.

The Feds Feed Families food drive has raised over 15.2 million pounds in donations since the program began in 2009. Last year more than 7.2 million pounds of foods was collected and the goal is to exceed that amount this year. For more information on this critical program visit fedsfeedfamilies.gov.

Feds Feed Families is a government-wide effort led by the Chief Human Capital Officers (CHCO) Council, in partnership with the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), and theU.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
