Honorable Tim Walz

Representing the 1st District of MINNESOTA

Science and Technology

The United States' position in the world is largely due to scientific progress achieved over the last century. We put a man on the moon, sent a rover to Mars, and discovered cures for once incurable diseases. Government funding is central to many of America's most important technological breakthroughs, and remaining competitive in the fields of science and technology is vital to maintaining our global leadership in an increasingly high-tech world.

Space Exploration

Space exploration helped inspire decades of unprecedented, American-led innovation in the fields of science and technology and worked to make America the world super power we are today Investments in space programs are crucial to remaining competitive and maintaining our global leadership in an increasingly high-tech world.

Recently, space exploration has been hit with deep budget cuts. This greatly hinders America’s ability in the science and technology field and underscores one of the many reasons we need to work together, make the hard decisions, and end the indiscriminate across-the-board sequestration cuts. I will continue to work in a bipartisan manner with anyone to ensure America remains a world leader in science and technology.

Medical Research

In 1928, Alexander Fleming made a ground breaking medical discovery when he uncovered the antibiotic penicillin, providing life-saving cures for diseases that were once thought incurable. Today, the same ground breaking medical research continues around the world and in places like the Mayo Clinic and the Hormel Institute in southern Minnesota. I firmly believe when the story of how the human race conquered cancer, that story will run through southern Minnesota.

Unfortunately, much like the space programs, funding for medical research is suffering due to the across-the-board spending cuts of sequestration. I remain dedicated to working with anyone to make the hard choices, tackle our budget woes while undoing the harmful cuts of sequestration, and ensuring our medical researchers in southern Minnesota and across the country have the tools they need to succeed and find cures for diseases that ail us.
