Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia

Chairman Steve Chabot (R-OH)
The regional shifts happening in the Middle East require that the U.S. seize the initiative to cement new partnerships and secure enduring strategic interests such as: promoting democratic governance, encouraging the respect for universal human rights, countering terrorism, securing energy supplies for global markets, countering proliferation, guarding against the threats posed by Iran and Syria, and moving forward on the Israel-Palestinian peace process. Although the most immediate challenge in South Asia is the war in Afghanistan, it is not our only concern. The U.S.-Pakistani relationship is at best a troubled one characterized by cooperation on some issues and obstruction on others. Under Mr. Chabot’s leadership, the Subcommittee works to advance U.S. interests throughout the Middle East and South Asia by overseeing and helping shape U.S. foreign policy toward these two turbulent regions.
