About the 9th District

Indiana's 9th Congressional District sits in south-central Indiana.  It runs from Johnson County (just outside of Indianapolis) in the north and then follows IN-37 and I-65 south to the majestic  and winding Ohio River, encompassing most of the Hoosier National Forest in the southwest. Major cities and towns include Bedford, Bloomington, Clarksville, Corydon, Franklin, Greenwood, Jeffersonville, Martinsville, Mitchell, New Albany, Paoli, Salem, Seymour, and Scottsburg.

Many of those cities and towns in the district are known for their history and beauty.  Corydon, for example, was the first state capital of Indiana, and the original State Capitol Building still stands in the middle of town.  Bedford, in Lawrence County, is known as the Limestone Capital of the World, and limestone from the area was used in creating several national monuments like the Washington Monument.  Papa John's started in Jeffersonville; golfing champion Fuzzy Zoeller still lives in his home Floyd County; and Johnson County is home to Camp Atterbury, a nationally recognized military training base run by the Indiana National Guard.  The 9th District is also home to Indiana University, based in Bloomington.

The original State Capitol building still sits in the middle of Corydon, which was Indiana's first capital The Orange County Courthouse in Paoli is representative of courthouses across the district The Sample Gates are one of the most well-known landmarks at Indiana University

Much of the economy in the 9th District centers around a diverse manufacturing and agriculture base.  Among our employers are pharmaceutical and medical device companies like Cook Medical and Baxter in Bloomington; nationally recognized commercial agricultural producers like Tyson Foods in Corydon and Rose Acre Farms in Seymour; barge maker Jeffboat, which is America's largest inland shipbuilding and repair facility;and military installations like Camp Atterbury and Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center (which sits just outside the district but employs thousands of 9th District constituents).

Outside the cities, the district has much to offer those who love the outdoors and nature.  In addition to many scenic view along the Ohio River, most of the 200,000 acre Hoosier National Forest sits within the 9th District.  The district is also home to two of the three largest state parks in Indiana: Brown County and Charlestown.  Other state parks include O'Bannon Woods and Falls of the Ohio, and the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge also sits just outside of Seymour.
