Press Release
Congress must overturn Obama’s Executive Orders, strip Executive of rulemaking power

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Stockman released the following statement Thursday responding to President Barack Obama’s announcement tonight:

Tonight Barack Obama will forsake his constitutionally-sworn role of President and take unlawful actions he himself defined as illegitimate.

Presidential power long ago broke out of its constitutional shackles, but Barack Obama has taken it even further, to dangerous extremes.  He has taken the disastrous hubris of Obamacare and applied it to our national security policy.

It’s time for Congress to restore its constitutional authority.

First, Congress must enact legislation specifically overturning these Executive Orders, wherever possible.

Second, Congress must exert its financial authority and defund all measures to enforce these orders, wherever possible.

Third, Congress must adopt legislation introduced in this Congress by myself and Senator Rand Paul.  H.R. 410, the “Restore the Constitution Act,” would nullify any executive action and prohibit funding of any action that oversteps the President’s constitutional authority.

Fourth, Congress must also adopt the REINS Act, which requires any major federal rule or regulation be debated and voted upon by Congress before taking effect.

Every day faceless, unelected federal bureaucrats issue their own “Executive Orders” in the form of regulations that rob citizens of rights and property, without due legislative process.

Barack Obama’s actions tonight are far more than a border security problem.  They are a constitutional security problem. Unless Congress takes these four actions to restore their authority, we lose both our borders and our constitutional republic.
