Walden Announces Hearing on Commercial Use of Federal Spectrum

Subcommittee Continues Working to Save Taxpayer Dollars and Spur Innovation

August 21, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Communications and Technology Subcommittee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) today announced an upcoming hearing to discuss how to free more federal spectrum for commercial use:

“Following a series of highly informative Federal Spectrum Working Group meetings, we have decided to move forward with a subcommittee hearing in September,” said Chairman Walden. “The subcommittee will continue to examine how both federal agencies and commercial wireless carriers might benefit from more efficient government use of spectrum. As the single largest spectrum user, the federal government could save taxpayers money and make more frequencies available to meet American consumers’ growing demand for mobile broadband services.”

Throughout the 112th Congress, the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology has focused on freeing more spectrum, most notably in the bipartisan spectrum provisions of the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012, which will help support the buildout of the next generation of wireless broadband network and help support the creation of hundreds of thousands of jobs.

The Federal Spectrum Working Group was created by Communications and Technology Subcommittee Chairman Greg Walden and Ranking Member Anna Eshoo to examine how the federal government can use the nation's airwaves more efficiently. The bipartisan working group is chaired by Reps. Brett Guthrie and Doris Matsui, and Reps. Shimkus, Rogers, Scalise, DeGette, Barrow and Christensen serve as members. Chairman Walden and Ranking Member Eshoo serve as ex-officio members. To learn more, click here.

Further details on the September spectrum hearing will be announced when available.
