Military Academy Nominations

 

West Point Military Academy SealIndividuals interested in attending one of the United States military academies must be nominated for admission by a U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator or the Vice President of the United States.  Students of these elite institutions receive a free, four-year college education and are required to serve in the military for a minimum of five years after commencement. 

Congresswoman Velázquez can nominate candidates for openings at the following military academies:

  • West Point
  • U.S. Naval Academy
  • U.S. Air Force Academy
  • Merchant Marine Academy
  • Please note, nomination is not required for the Coast Guard Academy

It is recommended that applicants request nomination toward the end of their junior year in high school.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens between the ages of 17 and 23, and must pass medical and physical tests.  In addition, applicants cannot have ever been married or have any legal dependents. 

To request a nomination from Congresswoman Velázquez, please visit her Brooklyn office located at 266 Broadway, Suite 201.  The office is open for inquiries Monday -Thursday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Applicants should bring the following materials with them:

  • Academy nomination application form
  • Official copy of ACT/SAT scores
  • Official high school transcript
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Two page essay on why you want to attend the academy

To increase the chance of being selected, it is encouraged that applicants seek as many nominations as possible by requesting nominations from their two U.S. Senators, their U.S. Representative, and the Vice President.
