Schwartz Statement on Vote to Address Threat from ISIL

Sep 17, 2014 Issues: Foreign Affairs

Washington, D.C. U.S. Rep. Allyson Y. Schwartz (PA-13) issued the following statement following her vote in support of an amendment to address the threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL):

“It is my belief that the President and Congress, in partnership with a broad coalition of partner nations, must act deliberately and forcefully to address the threat posed by ISIL.  These extremists have no respect for human life and have committed unspeakable acts of violence and terrorism.

The bipartisan amendment passed today in the House, as requested by the President, allows the United States to train and equip moderate Syrian opposition forces. It enables the President to continue to work with our allies and partners to defend the region from further destabilization from ISIL. It defines the mission, limits the scope, and includes strict reporting and accountability requirements. It specifically states that it is not an authorization for direct use of military force. Finally, this amendment supports the President’s humanitarian, diplomatic and military strategy to degrade and dismantle these terrorists.”
